The third and final class of the Black is Lit series, this class picks up from the early years of contemporary Black literature as students continue the exploration of some of the most influential writers of this time. Students will explore a wide range of fiction and non-fiction works from authors like Sonia Sanchez, Amiri Baraka, Toni Morrison, and Ralph Ellison while developing their listening, analytical discussion, and writing skills. Genres like drama, mystery, and Afrofuturism will be explored. This class meets virtually, and students are expected to complete independent at-home assignments in between virtual class meetings. Students receive a final grade for their work and participation upon completion of the class. There may be some culturally sensitive topics like racism, oppression, religion, and women’s rights. Such topics will be addressed as they arise and discussed from an age-appropriate perspective. The Black is Lit classes are created in alignment with the SC standards for high school English Comp.
